- Why armwrestling? How did you get into this sport? I have always been strong and liked armwrestling, but I did not know it is a "real" sport until I saw Heidi's document on Finnish tv. After that it was easy to find the Finnish armwrestling clubs from the net. After the very first training I was sure that this is "my thing". Tell me about armwrestling in Finland, is armwrestling a part of the sports federation like football, wrestling and all other sports? As far as I know Finland's armwrestling assosiation or federation is independent.

- Is the sport growing in Finland? Some new faces come up regularly, but the growth is slow. Now that there is more armwrestling in international media (Eurosport etc.) it should affect the public image and popularity of the sport also in Finland. I hope so! We armwrestlers do our best of course by introducing armwrestling to people in different occasions. Anything from pre-Christmas parties to sport events. |

How much do you train? That varies a lot. Sometimes I train so hard that I can't do anything with my arms for days Usually I train 6 days/week. Training by the armwrestling table once a week and the rest is gym. Some muscle groups take longer to recover but forearms I can train almost every day. Whenever I DO NOT feel pain I feel that I have not trained enough, haha. |
|
There are many..I like training with free weights and my new favourite is wrist rotators and front part of forearm with towel. I always try to find new methods or improve the old ones. I change my training often because I do not want my body to get used to it. Development comes from breaking the balance.
Yes, other sports that I have practised are: horse riding, slalom skiing, long distance running, judo, archery and badminton. I still love slalom skiing and skating but that is just for fun. I am also always ready for a table tennis match!
The goal is to be the best, of course. I have not reached my peak yet, not even close. I am still getting stronger and learning and I hope that will continue! |

What hobbies do you have? I could say art, but now I do not know if it is a hobby or a profession, maybe both.. I love taking long walks in the forest with my dog, working outdoors, makingfirewood.. actually, my favourite toys are an axe and a chainsaw, haha. Sometimes I write. Sometimes I just think. That is probably something I do too much.
s there any female armwrestler in the world that you think is able to beat Irina Makeeva? I would say Egle Vaitkute has a very good chance in winning against Irina at the moment. It would be great to see them meet when nonoe of them are tired!
Who is your dream opponent in armwrestling? I cannot name one. Anyone who can give me a challenge. Then there are nightmare-opponents also! :D
Something else you want to tell us? I have huge respect for those who have trained for years and made it to the top. It gets more difficult all the time as the sport grows. Respect is something all athletes should have for each other. Even in bad moments. In every match there is a winner and a loser, the will to win and the fear of losing. We have all been there and know how it feels. With the right attitude you can see a stronger opponent as inspiring, a reason to get stronger and better. If your opponent feels impossible to win, it just proves that in fact, it is possible to get that strong!
Just like everyone else, I would like to see armwrestling become an olympic sport!
Thank you Anne and WELCOME to Sweden 8th of march 2010.
